Budget Bougie

This design was prompted by the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals 2019 Student Challenge: In this year’s challenge "Hollywood on a Budget", we want to see what you can do when faced with the challenge of designing the look of a high-end garment with a limited budget. Although a limited budget can be considered only spending a small amount of money; it can also mean wisely spending your money. You, the designer, can choose to do this in a variety of ways, like recycling fabric scraps from another project, using fabric from existing garments to create a new design, or even using unconventional materials.

I was able to recycle packaging straps and use them as boning for the bodice. By finding enough white fabric from past projects, I made the bodice and modesty skirt without having to buy any new fabric. However, I did have to buy twelve yards of chiffon for the tiered skirt. In total, I spent $67.35 in new fabric and notions.

Movement

While the bodice provides structure, the tiered skirt reflects the draped, excessive curtains from interior design details. The five layer skirt is divided into three panels to give movement on the runway. The chiffon layers suggest indulgence and glamour as a flare of 1950s Hollywood.

Structure

The structured bodice embodies the bold architecture of  cityscapes seen in black and white photographs from the 1950s. The scooped neckline is complimented by angular princess seams. The dress overall captures of sense of strength and elegance.

Rustic Chic

All About Details

The leather welted pockets are complimented by the leather bound button holes featuring hand-made wooden buttons. On the inside, the plaid gives a pop of color which includes a left chest welted pocket.

Rustic Chic tailored collection is designed for a man who wants to be comfortable and subtly stylish. The coat silhouette is inspired by the classic Chesterfield overcoat. With an accent velvet collar, the coat is single-breasted instead of having the traditional double-breasted button detail. The coat also features leather bound button-holes, leather welted-pockets, contrast plaid lining, and an interior welted pocket. Any man can look fashionable yet understated in this tailored overcoat.
